Die höchste Kunst beim Spiel der Snaredrum ist das Rudimental Drumming, vielleicht vergleichbar mit dem Spiel des klassischen Pianos. Leider ist das weitgehend unbekannt. Der einzige Ort an dem die Massen sogar zu Wettbewerben gehen und dort diese Kunst genießen und anerkennen ist Nordamerika. Aber selbst dort sind die meisten der hochkarätigen Trommler Amateure, d.h. sie haben ganz normale Jobs in den verschiedensten Berufen.
Rudimental Drumming is the highest art of snare drum playing, comparible maybe to the classical tradition of playing a piano. But only very few people know about it. The only place where crouds of people go to listen to contests, enjoying and respecting this art, is North America. But even there most of the high class performers are still amateurs what means they have regular jobs in different professions.
In Europa gibt es nur zwei Orte wo man heute noch die großartige Tradition des Rudimental Drumming finden kann – konserviert und verfeinert über Jahrhunderte: Basel in der Schweiz und Glasgow in Schottland. Davon abgesehen wird man kaum Spuren dieser hochentwickelten Trommelkunst finden. Die Kunst des Rudimental Drumming ist daher sogar für den engagierten Drummer etwas Verborgenes, obwohl kein Geheimnis daraus gemacht wird.
In Europe we have only two places where you can find the great tradition of Rudimental Art, conserved and refined over the centuries: Basel (Switzerland) and Glasgow (Scotland). Beneath them you won’t find many traces of this high developed european drum style. So the art of Rudimental Drumming is still a little bit secret even for engaged drummers and although it isn’t kept like a secret at all.
Von wenigen unbekannten oder vergessenen Ausnahmen abgesehen gibt es heutzutage drei Richtungen: Das amerikanische Rudimental Drumming, das schottische Trommeln und das Basler Trommeln. Während des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts gab es auch in Frankreich eine herausragende Trommeltradition. Diese beeinflusste später stark das Basler Trommeln und machte es zu dem, was es heute ist.
Among some other small circles not or no more known today we have got by now three different drum styles: american rudimental drumming, scotch pipe drumming and Basel drumming. During the 18th and 19th century there was also an outstanding tradition of drumming in France. Many influences of that french style went to Basel later on and made the Basel style what it is today – an unrevealed technique of power and speed.
Die Tradition des Basler Trommelns und des schottischen Trommelns gehört des weiteren zu einem wichtigen Teil unserer Geschichte: Sie führt uns zurück ins Mittelalter – damals kam die Snaredrum in Europa auf, übernommen von nordafrikanischen Sarazenern während der Kreuzzüge. Daher ist das Rudimental Drumming eine der ältesten musikalischen Künste: Älter als die Oper, älter als die ersten Sinfonien, viel älter als das Pianoforte.
The tradition of Basel drumming and scotch drumming belongs also to a very important part of human history. It leads back to the middle age – just to that time snare drums were going to be established in Europe by taking them away from north african saracens during the era of crusades. So rudimental drumming is one of the oldes musical arts of our history: older than the opera, older than the first sinfonies, much older than the pianoforte.
